The Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy says, "In our every deliberation we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." We believe that.
We've been into the sustainable food movement as a business for 20-plus years, since our beginning. The Cap'n took part in the process of ironing out the standards for the Organic Food Act in 1990. I grew up that way, my mother started the first natural food coop in our area in the late 60's with a few friends, ordering organic food in bulk and sharing it among five families. It took us 25 years to use up the 5 pounds of bay leaves that were our share in the first ever order from the natural wholesaler at the time! (They were still good -- just had to use 6 instead of one!)
It is our joy contributing to sustainable living through the food we make and sell and through the farmers market community we are a part of. The San Francisco Bay Area's exuberant and caring food scene keeps us happy, healthy and feeling like, in our way, we're doing our part for the seventh generation.
What a life! Someone’s got to do it, it might as well be us.
When the salmon calls, you’ve got to answer. That’s exactly what I did. Who’d have thought that some 20 odd years later, I’d still be doing it and digging it. Bringing the freshest fish right out of the cold north Pacific and slowly, over Alderwood coals, making the best smoked fish there is!! That’s what our customers tell us. Sunset Magazine agrees with them, and Ski Magazine, and the New York Times! A great article in the San Francisco Chronicle, too. And, most importantly, that’s what my wife, Sally, said when she bought some fish from me at a farmers market 15 years ago and decided not to let me go. And then selling our fish at the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area farmers markets. Talking and laughing with the people all day long.
At my first farmers market in Redwood City, I didn’t have labels or fancy packaging. No prices even. I just guessed at what each piece was worth. I tossed my first batch of smoked fish on the table and it was gone in just over an hour. I thought, “That’s a good job!”. And it’s been fun ever since. I found a wife and a world of friends and great people at the farmers markets. Bringing the best fish to the best people. It’s all about loving what we do.
Playing a little surf guitar when I need some down time, or riding the waves to let loose. My absolutely gorgeous wife is a monster cook. She usually interviews me at 4 am on the way to the Saturday farmers market about what I want to eat for dinner on Thursday!!! Kayaking our North Coast rivers is her down time.
What a life! Hey, someone’s gotta do it, it might as well be us!
Holiday gift giving often times leaves a lasting impression on our waistlines. But this tasty gift from one fish-loving family member to another proved that not all food-focused presents are guilt-laden.
From Salmon Jerky to Smoked Albacore to Indian Smoked Salmon and (our favorite) Salmon Candy, founder and smoker Cap?n Mike pulls the freshest catch out of the Pacific and smokes them himself over Alderwood coals.
Preservative free, packed with protein and good-for-you Omega-3 fatty acids, we've added their Fish of the Month Club to our New Year's Resolutions.

Cap'n Mike's Holy Smoked Salmon is a husband-and-wife company that smokes fresh fish from California's north coast using his Native American family's techniques. The result is a selection of moist, flaky and flavorful albacore, black cod (sable), steelhead trout, and their specialty, salmon. Gift boxes are available ($75 - $750). Along with seasonal specialties, Cap'n Mike offers, naturally, a "Fish of the Month Club," $75.00/month for two fish each month or for as many months as you like.
